The Dos and Don’ts of Telemarketing

Telemarketing is a traditional format used to create opportunities through direct conversation with interested parties. While some argue it is an outdated and overused method, direct communication is crucial in business. Here are some of the must-follow rules for a successful cold call:

1. Don’t fear rejection

Plenty of calls will result in “no” so it is best not to get discouraged.

2. Do call at the proper time of day.

Make sure you are calling during appropriate office hours, and take notice of time zone differences. If you can, keep track of what time the most calls turn into successful connections.

3. Don’t waste your or the prospects’ time.

Time is money! If you know the call isn’t going anywhere, don’t force interest and end the call respectfully.

4. Don’t use a script.

Using a script is common in telemarketing, but many people can recognize when someone is insincere. If possible, obtain as much information on what you are offering and speak from your knowledge.

5. Do speak in an exciting and welcoming tone.

Prospects will hang up if you sound like a robot. Guaranteed!

6. Don’t talk over anyone.

Try not to get wrapped up in what you need to say, but instead listen to any questions and interjections. This is a conversation, not a monologue.

7. Do leave messages and voicemails.

Plenty of people avoid calls from numbers they don’t know, but that doesn’t mean they are not interested. Leave a voicemail and introduce yourself and what you are offering. Don’t forget to speak clearly and leave more than one form of contact information.
